The Most Common Lawn Weeds & How to Eradicate Them

Be on the Lookout for the Most Common Lawn Weeds

Weeds can be a nightmare, but don’t worry, Bayside Sod’s got you covered! From pesky grasses and sedges to broadleaf weeds and vines, we’ll help you identify the most common lawn weeds so that you know how to take care of them before they spread.

If you live in Florida and have noticed some unwanted visitors in your lawn or garden, here’s a list of the most common lawn weeds and how to eradicate them:

Crabgrass

This annual weed is common in Florida lawns. It has a low-growing, coarse texture with light green leaves and can spread quickly if you don’t take action. Crabgrass is easiest to control by taking a preventative approach with pre-emergent herbicides and regular mowing.

Dallisgrass

Another annual weed, this grass has a coarse texture with deep green leaves that look similar to St. Augustine Grass. It grows in clumps and can take over an area quickly if not taken care of. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to control with post-emergent herbicides and frequent mowing.

Florida Pusley

This pesky weed is widespread in Florida lawns, particularly during the summer when temperatures are high and rain is scarce. It has light green leaves with a smooth texture and spreads quickly via seeds if not taken care of promptly. Pusley can be managed by hand-pulling and spot-treating with post-emergent herbicides.

Florida Betony

This perennial weed has dark green leaves and can spread quickly via rhizomes if not taken care of promptly. Betony is a bit more challenging to manage than other weeds, but it can be done using pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides.

Dollarweed

As the name implies, Dollarweed is a prevalent lawn weed in Florida that spreads rapidly if left unchecked, costing you “dollars” down the road. It has light green leaves with a smooth texture and prefers moist conditions, making it especially hard to control during rainy seasons. The best way to manage this nuisance is by applying pre-emergent herbicides and spot-treating with post-emergents.
